Hélène Frohard-Dourlent received their Ph.D. and M.A. in Sociology from the University of British Columbia, and their B.A. from the Université de Paris 3-Sorbonne Nouvelle. Hélène is working on analyzing qualitative data from the Trans Youth Health survey and is a co-investigator on the two gender-affirming surgery research projects that SARAVYC is undertaking in collaboration with the Provincial Health program Trans Care BC.
Hélène’s dissertation focused on the experiences of K-12 educators who have worked with trans and gender-nonconforming students in British Columbia and demonstrated that educators’ efforts to be supportive are complicated by the entrenched structures and discourses that they have to navigate. Hélène’s research interests include issues of gender and sexuality in education, gender identity as a social determinant of health, discourse and media representations. Hélène’s research and teaching is informed by their advocacy work and continued involvement in local queer and trans communities.
